The Son of Man is an oratorio is in two parts, each lasting approximately fifty minutes and scored for choir, three soloists and chamber orchestra. The baritone soloist takes on the role of the Son of Man, while the soprano and tenor add commentary to the unfolding story. A special symbiosis of music and poetry opens up the visions of Ezekiel, the dreams of Daniel, the meditations of the Psalmist, and the revelations of St John the Divine.

Following in the footsteps of Handel’s Messiah, the work uses texts from both the Old and New Testaments. Unlike Messiah, however, which is a devotional work in adoration and praise of the man Jesus, The Son of Man addresses eternal questions: What does it mean to be human? How are we to understand the purpose and destiny of our life? What does a fully realised human life look like?

Expressed in Patrick’s unique way, the music is thoroughly accessible, lyrical and emotive.

The oratorio received a rapturous response at its World Premiere in Houston, Texas September 2024, performed by the Grammy® award-winning Houston Chamber Choir and Houston Symphony.

The Last Post originally appeared as part of the fourth and final movement of The Great War Symphony written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. It fuses the words of the iconic poem by Laurence Binyon with the bugle (or trumpet) playing the Last Post. The choir must strive above all else to blend with the timbre of the soprano soloist, ensuring that their dynamic level never interferes with her piano singing. The choral phrases must be as legato as possible with pure, focused vowel sounds.

The Dead Soldier originally appeared as part of the third movement of The Great War Symphony written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. It is important for choirs to be aware throughout of the independent, melodic accompaniment where much of the sorrow of this moving poem is centred. Every effort should be made to convey the words clearly especially in the first verse where the syntax is quite complex. Equally important, is that performers should identify with the deep pain felt at the loss of a loved one.

Gallipoli originally appeared as part of the second movement of The Great War Symphony written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The moving words of Sydney Bolitho which are well-known in Australia deserve wider recognition and this setting seeks to show them in a majestic, optimistic light. In performance, it is important to convey a sense of sorrow but also a feeling of strength and courage.

Note: In this standalone version, Patrick has introduced a third verse to the piece that isn’t present in the original Symphony.

Anthem for Doomed Youth originally appeared as part of the third movement of The Great War Symphony written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The well-known words by Wilfred Owen are sung against an instrumental elegy. For this reason, the accompaniment should make perfect sense in itself with the frequently syncopated, broken choral parts suggesting a sense of grief – even of weeping.
