A beautiful setting of this unusual fifteenth-century text. There is an overriding atmosphere of joy and intense love, as well as touching moments of pathos, especially in relation to the premonition of Calvary.

Choirs should aim to have a clear understanding of the nuances of the text, particularly in terms of the dialogue between Mary and Joseph.

Underlying the entire performance should be a subtle sense of urgency as the poet’s dream unfolds. An optimistic tempo should remain rock-solid throughout and a sense of forward momentum must be maintained. The quaver patterns in the organ call for a bright registration, but not at a volume which dominates.

This endernight I saw a sight,
All in my sleep:
Mary, that may, she sang lullay
And sore did weep;
To keep she sought full fast about
Her Son from cold.
Joseph said, “Wife, my joy, my life,
Say what ye would.”
“Nothing, my spouse, is in this house
Unto my pay;
My Son a king, that made all thing,
Lieth in hay.
“Ah, my dear Son,” said Mary, “ah, my dear,
Kiss Thy mother, Jesu, with a laughing cheer.”

“My mother dear, amend your cheer
And now be still;
Thus for to lie it is soothly
My Father’s will;
Derision, great passion,
Infinitely,
As it is found, many a wound
Suffer shall I;
On Calvary that is so high
There shall I be,
Man to restore, nailëd full sore
Upon a tree.”
“Ah, my dear Son,” said Mary, “ah, my dear,
Kiss Thy mother, Jesu, with a laughing cheer.”

Duration: 5 minutes Chorus: SATB Instrumentation: Organ A piece full of unbridled majesty and victory through its colourful registrations and insistent rhythmic patterns. Perfect for Christmas or the great Feast of Christ the King.

This carol is intended to be used either within a Christmas carol service or as a stand-alone Christmas centrepiece. The beautiful words by Patrick’s brother Andrew have resulted in a work full of contrast and variety, and it is important that a full palette of colours is conveyed. The fanfare-like sections need to be majestic and exhilarating whereas the more lyrical moments (normally accompanied by playful quavers on the organ) should be warmer and more expressive. The Kingship of Christ is portrayed in its many forms (both humble and mighty) and these two extremes must also become clear to the listener. Although intended primarily for Christmas, the piece would work well for the great Feast of Christ The King.

Commissioned by Wells Cathedral, Patrick was asked to write a new work for the Cathedral Choir and this new anthem Most Glorious Lord of Life – for choir and organ – was premiered as part of the Cathedral’s ‘Sound of Wells Festival 2023’. The work takes its title from the poem ‘Easter Sonnet’ or ‘Sonnet 68’ by the 16th century English poet Edmund Spenser which glorifies Christ’s sacrifice for mankind and praises his path of love. Patrick’s setting conveys the poem’s message of the extreme power of love, and encouragement to others to devote their lives to preach Christ’s path, knowledge, affection, and kindness.

The main theme, first appearing in the choir’s opening phrase, reaches upwards in three clear steps, inviting the listener to become directly involved in a sense of being ‘raised’. The theme’s second appearance is more joyous as a result of the slightly quicker tempo and the urgency of the choral imitation until this first of three main sections comes to a decisive close.

The middle section, featuring solo soprano and a cappella choir, is a quiet reflection on the way in which we must ‘weigh’ the love which Christ won for us at such great cost and, with the full choir, there appears the anthem’s main invitation – that we ‘with love may one another entertain.’

The final section urges us to be unafraid of taking up this invitation as references to the main theme reappear and the textures swell again and again until the final climax is reached, and we are able to deliver our final words of thanksgiving to the Glorious Lord of Life on the occasion of his mighty Resurrection.

Most glorious Lord of life, that on this day,
Didst make thy triumph over death and sin:
And having harrow’d hell, didst bring away
Captivity thence captive, us to win:
This joyous day, dear Lord, with joy begin,
And grant that we for whom thou diddest die,
Being with thy dear blood clean wash’d from sin,
May live for ever in felicity.
And that thy love we weighing worthily,
May likewise love thee for the same again:
And for thy sake, that all like dear didst buy,
With love may one another entertain.
So let us love, dear love, like as we ought,
Love is the lesson which the Lord us taught.

Duration: 12 minutes Chorus: Double SATB choir Instrumentation: Organ Commissioned by Proms at St Jude's, this work conveys the innocent and tragic suffering of children in war.

The post The Innocents<br>(Vocal Score) appeared first on Hawes Music Publishing.

This work was commissioned by Proms at St Jude’s (London) to mark the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the SS City of Benares during WW2. The premiere took place in 2022 by the world renowned Voces8 alongside Finchley Children’s Music Group and organist Roger Sayer.

The Benares was a ship carrying 90 children away from wartime London to safety in Canada, but nearly all the children perished after the ship was torpedoed, along with many of their escorts.

Innocent and tragic suffering in war and the fate of children caught up in armed conflict are universal themes. In the sinking of the Benares, at night, far from land, on a voyage that should have taken the children to safety, this suffering unfolded in unimaginable terror. The text for this piece – by Patrick’s brother Andrew – does deliberately sacrifice particular and detailed reference to the sinking in order to draw out the timeless tragedy of children in war. Nevertheless, it is hoped that those who hear this work will have no doubt that it honours both the children and adults who lost their lives in the sinking of the Benares.

The work is scored for two SATB choirs and organ and follows a largely through-composed musical structure. The opening chorale, however, does recur at strategic points: as well as ending the work, it appears in the second choir as an important backdrop to the climax of the drama whilst the first choir describes the terrifying moments of the torpedoes’ impact.

At one extreme, the deep sonorities of the organ suggest the depths of the ocean and the ‘double darkness’. At the other, quiet registrations on the choir and swell manuals are intended to evoke an air of innocent beauty. As the work draws to a close, the appearance of a solo soprano brings home the very personal grief of the family members and friends of those who drowned in the darkness of that September night.

The premiere was due to take place in Summer 2020 but, due to the Covid pandemic, was postponed to 2022. However, during the pandemic, the Proms team created ‘Proms At Home’, a series of special events to keep the festival spirit alive!

As part of that, they produced this documentary revealing the inspiration behind The Innocents including interviews with Patrick, the librettist Andrew Hawes, Paul Smith from Voces8 and Benares expert Alan Walker. It also includes music from Voces8 and soprano Grace Davidson.
